Your first visit
No surprises — just an honest first look
You'll get a thorough exam, a plain-English breakdown of what we find, and a plan you actually understand before anything happens to your teeth.
What happens at your first appointment
Dr. Kim will sit down with you, look at your full mouth, and walk you through what he sees. If you’ve had concerns brewing for a while, this is your chance to lay them out without feeling rushed.
For most patients, we can begin treatment that same day. For more complex needs — implants, multiple restorations, full mouth planning — we'll usually schedule a second visit so we can map things out properly.
What to bring
- Previous dental X-rays — if your last dentist has recent images, ask them to send them over (or bring a copy).
- Medication list — every prescription and over-the-counter medication you take regularly.
- Insurance card — if you have one. If not, ask us about the Virginia Dental Club.
- A parent or guardian — required for any patient under 18.
Heads up before you come in
If you have a medical condition that affects dental treatment — diabetes, high blood pressure, an artificial heart valve, recent surgery — or if you're on blood thinners, aspirin, or heart medication, please let our front desk know when you book. It helps us plan a safer, smoother visit.
Common questions
Frequently asked
- How long does the first visit take?
- Plan on about an hour. We block extra time so your doctor can do a thorough exam, talk through findings in plain English, and answer every question you have before you leave.
- What should I bring with me?
- If you have prior dental X-rays, please bring them or have your previous office send them over. Also bring a list of any medications you currently take and your insurance card if you have one.
- Can children come in for a first visit?
- Yes — we see kids and adults in the same practice. Patients under 18 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the first visit.
- Will you need to take new X-rays?
- If your previous dentist's X-rays are recent and complete, we'll usually use those. If we need more current images for diagnosis, we have digital X-ray equipment on site (low radiation dose, instant results).
- Can I get treatment the same day?
- Often, yes. For straightforward needs like a cleaning or a small filling, treatment can begin during your first visit. For more complex care — implants, root canals, full mouth work — we'll schedule a second visit after we've planned things out.
- What if I'm anxious about the dentist?
- Tell us — even just a quick mention at the front desk helps. We have sedation and comfort options for nervous patients, and you can read more on our Patient Comfort page.
- Do I need to fill out paperwork ahead of time?
- It's optional but helpful. Our online Patient Registration form takes about 10 minutes and means you can walk in and head straight back. Paper forms are available if you'd rather fill them out in the office.
